About the Centre

In September 2008, the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies was designated a Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) Collaborating Centre for Nursing Human Resources Development and Patient Safety.

In September of 2012 this prestigious recognition was renewed by the WHO for another 4 years. The School’s PAHO / WHO Centre initiatives promote dialogue and the mutual exchange of healthcare knowledge with its international neighbors, with a special emphasis on patient safety education, curriculum and workforce development and multi-Center research projects in critical regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. Our goals for the 2012-2016 re-designation cycle are to collaborate with the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to:

  • Develop and strengthen nursing education in the regions of the Americas, with a focus on curriculum development in nursing care and patient safety
  • Disseminate critical information and share knowledge regarding patient safety to enhance nursing workforce development and technical expertise in the regions of the Americas and Africa
  • Develop and strengthen multi-center research projects in the regions of the Americas, with a focus on nursing workforce development, patient safety, and health disparities
