Faculty Exchange

Faculty exchanges are at the heart of the development of nursing human resources and the promotion of patient safety.  SONHS contributes to the quality of the global nursing workforce by helping to strengthen the programs that educate that workforce.  We share our commitment to nursing education grounded in patient safety with visiting faculty by working with them to integrate patient safety-related initiatives into their curricula.

One powerful way to teach patient safety is through the use of clinical simulation.  Visiting faculty learn ways in which simulation can be incorporated into students’ program of study. Our PAHO / WHO CC faculty, with the support of the ’ University of Miami Simulation Hospital at the School of Nursing and Health Studies, has developed a course entitled “Simulation Strategies Workshop for Patient Safety”.  The objective of this 3-to-5-day course is to provide generalized knowledge of simulation for the purpose of facilitating its integration into nursing programs.  This course targets Spanish-speaking nursing professionals.

Our WHO CC faculty provided expert consultation regarding curriculum development at the invitation of the following international institutions of higher education, including how to integrate simulation training into their curricula:

  • Dean Nilda (Nena) P. Peragallo Montano, DrPH, RN, FAAN, Director of our WHO CC, and Dr. Rosina Cianelli, faculty of the School of Nursing and Health Studies, traveled to Les Cayes, in the southwest corridor of Haiti, a WHO-identified critical region, to meet with the Haitian Minister of Health, Dr. Florence Guillaume as well as the Dean and faculty of De Ecole Infirmerie Des Cayes (Les Cayes School of Nursing) regarding how to expand the family planning/midwifery training of nurses and other healthcare workers at the State Nursing School. Curriculum planning discussions included expansion of faculty capacity at Les Cayes nursing school and provision of continuing education resources to the general nursing workforce in Haiti.
  • Dr. Susana Barroso from our WHO CC traveled to Escuela de Enfermería de la Universidad de Sao Paolo en Ribeirao Preto, Brazil to provide “Simulation Strategies Workshop”
  • Drs. Johis Ortega and Susana Barroso from our WHO CC traveled to National Tapei University of Nursing and Health Sciences, Taiwan, to provide “Simulation Strategies Workshop”
  • Drs. Johis Ortega and Susana Barroso from our WHO CC traveled to Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to provide “Simulation Strategies Workshop”

During their knowledge-and-technical support enhancing visits to the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies in 2012, faculty from the following institutions of higher education in the PAHO region and beyond consulted with our WHO CC / International Academy for Clinical Simulation and Research faculty regarding how to incorporate simulation training techniques into their curricula:

  • Universidad Interamerican de Puerto Rico, Recinto de San German (Puerto Rico; 1 faculty member)
  • KOC University (Istanbul, Turkey; 3 faculty members)
  • Universidad Andres Bello (Chile; 1 faculty member)
  • Pontifica Universidad Catolica de Chile (Chile; 2 faculty members)
  • National Tapei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (Taiwan; 1 faculty member)
