The year 2020 may be over, but the School of Nursing and Health Studies remains committed to advancing the nursing leadership and visibility initiatives emphasized by the International Year of the Nurse and the Nursing Now campaign. January 1, 2020
As Dean of the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, I’m excited to announce our school’s support for the global Nursing Now campaign to improve health by raising the status and profile of nursing. To deepen our school’s commitment at the national level, we have proudly joined Nursing Now USA’s Coalition and Steering Committee, and developed our own South Florida Nursing Now USA Lecture Series.
Nursing Now USA is among more than 115 regional and national groups involved in the growing Nursing Now movement, which culminates in 2020 with celebrations surrounding the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. This first-ever designation by the World Health Organization honors pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday and provides an unprecedented opportunity to shine a light on the incredible work of nurses and midwives around the world.
As Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO, has said, “Over the years, nurses and midwives have contributed to major global health landmarks, like the eradication of small pox and the dramatic reductions in maternal and child mortality that have occurred in many countries. But nurses and midwives need support, and they need recognition.”
NOW IS THE TIME.
The School of Nursing and Health Studies has also accepted Nursing Now’s Nightingale Challenge to foster leadership skills in over 20,000 emerging nurses worldwide in 2020. Building on our success in preparing culturally competent leaders, practitioners, and advocates in health, we will provide leadership and development training to 20 early career nurses working in South Florida, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
And we have much more in store for the Year of the Nurse! Keep checking back as we will update this space with new events, opportunities, and resources.
